WOYWW 11th Anniversary

Happy 11th anniversary for What's on Your Workdesk Wednesday!  I cannot believe it has been going 11 years?  Where has the time gone?  I bet 11 years ago the lovely Queen of the Desks, aka Julia, never imagined it would go around the globe for all this time!

If you have NO idea what I am blathering on about the full details are on her blog here

Normally for the anniversary we would do cards, ATC's and even a crop/meet up (or cake eating exercise-OR the first time I tasted Fiona's amazing vegan curry) .  Sadly we can't meet up and rather than put additional pressure on the amazing mail system Julia challenged us with a task!  This year we have to pick a UFO (unfinished object) and finish it!!!

Well, there are SO many UFO's to choose from and rather than cards etc I thought I would ferret around in my fabric stash and came across a transfer design I ironed onto fabric MANY years ago then promptly did bugger all with!  So, I made a start, I am realistic that I won't finish it BUT I am planning to finish at least ONE of the roller skates as I can then look to turn it into something.

When I was a kid I loved my rollerskates, yellow and orange/red just like these and I mean LOVED I even used to cycle my bike in them!  My dad used to work in a factory that made a variety of different items from racing car tyres, submarine parts and most importantly totally ball shaped skateboard wheels and bearings (not flat faced like these in the picture)!!!  This meant he was able to get them fitted to my skates and they were for speed skating and tricks as only the smallest area touched the floor!  I was in AWE of them!!

Anyway, seeing this I thought I would have a go at finishing one of the skates off, will take a while as my hands and rheumatoid arthritis means I can only do short bursts BUT I will post some pictures of my progress and of the finished article!

Happy WOYWW
Kyla

  2. I can't roller skate Kyla, although I did manage ice skating when I was (a lot) younger. Look forward to seeing the progress of your project. Stay safe and happy WOYWW. Sarah #15.

  3. Morning Kyla. Happy 11th anniversary. Good for you! Trying something like embroidery - I do trust your lovely roller skates will get finished - just take your time. My hubby had very arthritic hands, and had to learn just to take his time to do things - hard to learn, but necessary, isn't it? That picture holds such amazing memories that it WILL be done.
Take care. Stay safe. God bless.

  4. AAAHHH! Roller skates! They were superb! How I loved mine, even after I broke my leg (dip in the pavement) it didn't take long for them to be back on my feet. Thank you for the happy memories.
Will watch your progress in the stitching with interest.
    Take care and stay safe
    Happy Anniversary

  7. Happy 11th Bloggyversary Kyla! So many lovely memories on everyone's blogs today. I loved your story about the roller skates, bet you were fantastic on them. I was a complete tomboy and my favourite things were the stilts that my dad made for me, i loved those things and walk for ages on them. Wish my balance was as good today - damn vertigo. Have fun with your roller skate UFO, it'll be fun to see the finished article as and when.

  8. Hi Kyla, that looks like a great project, not done any cross stitch/embroidery for years now. Great story about skates, personally I never managed to get the hang of balancing on something that moved, lol. Stay safe, have a lovely week, Hugs, Shaz #12 X

  10. Happy 11th Anniversary, Kyla. I love your roller skate project. This made my hands cramp just thinking about how much work you have ahead of you. Like you, I loved roller skating, but mine were just the normal ones like the ones you rent at the skating rinks. Happy WOYWW from # 6.

  12. Ooh I love your winged skates, Kyla!! Here's hoping the arthritis won't prevent you from finishing both of them. That particular UFO has triggered some very happy memories for you, I can tell. Your dad must have been awesome and I am sure the envy of all the other kids with his talents! My sister used to have roller skates but I could never master them - my balance has always been poor. I couldn't ride a push bike till I was about 11.

I think you've hit the nail on the head regarding finishing UFOs - working in short bursts! It's all too easy to get overwhelmed with the amount of work involved, and then ending up doing nothing at all, but a stitch here and a stitch there, and before you know it, it's done! I take great encouragement from that.

    Happy WOYWW 11th anniversary,

I remember my skates, loved them, used to go along the village in them to get the bread, mum used to go mad, but didn't stop me.
Looking forward to seeing the finished thing
    Bless you

  18. Sorry I’m late! What a fab memory that roller skate embroidery prompted! Always fancied myself as good at inlet skating but I wasn’t, really. But boy, you get get some proper speed up! The assistants in Carrefour wear inline skates for good reason, and boy most of them have lovely legs because of it! Good for you for digging out the UFO, I think You chose hard one, given the RA. My daughter and her chums are wearing self embroidered logo patches etc on everything these days. Better get your skates on if you wann keep up with the tend! Oh, I slay myself!!
